What are Skilled Nursing facilities?
Nursing Homes, also called Skilled Nursing facilities, provide significant hands-on 24/7 care with the activities of daily life and/or care needed post surgery, during recovery from an illness or due to a chronic medical condition.
Each resident in a Skilled Nursing facility is under the care and supervision of an on-site physician as well as other skilled on-site professionals, including physical and occupational therapists, psychiatric professionals, social workers, and nursing staff.
In addition to long-term care, many Skilled Nursing facilities have specialized short-term rehabilitation units that might, for example, be needed after a hospital stay before a return home or to a senior living community setting.
Although not an exhaustive list, Skilled Nursing facilities typically provide the following:
- Wound care
- Rehabilitation following surgery
- Care for acute medical conditions
- Respiratory therapy
- Colostomy and catheter care
- Therapeutic diets
- Activities and socialization opportunities
